The Look, by Sophia Bennet

Sophia Bennett is one of my favourite Young Adult writers. Her writing is cool, funny and at times very sad. Her books, especially The Look, are well researched and sensitively written.

The Look introduces us to Ted, an ordinary looking girl and her beautiful older sister Ava.

On a trip to London Ted is scouted by a modelling agency, and can’t quite believe it. But tragically at the same time her sister is diagnosed with cancer.

This story could be so predictable, but it isn’t. One minute you’re laughing at the ridiculous things Ted is made to do in her new modelling role, then you’re welling up at the harsh realities of Ava’s illness.

The Look reminds you of the important things and people in your life, and what a blessing it is to have a supportive network around you. It really is the sisters’: ‘We’ll get through this together, no matter what’ attitude that keeps you believing in the story.

The Look also has a very stylish cover and extraordinarily bright pink page edges – the perfect accessory to be carrying around, yes?
