Wonder, by R. J. Palacio
A funny, uplifting and important read for anyone age 10 to adult.
August Walters is a normal 10 year old boy – he likes playing on his X-Box, is a big Star Wars fan and loves his dog Daisy.
But August is also very different from everyone else. He was born with a facial deformity that after several operations has left his face completely unrecognisable.
August talks about how scary it is to start school, (he has been home-schooled up to now), to make friends when everyone is either staring at you, making secret sideway glances or doing a double take. He may be used to it by now, but that doesn’t make it any easier for him to deal with.
In Wonder, we are reminded to not judge someone by their appearance, but instead to judge them on their kindness, intelligence and strength.
Wonder has been shortlisted for the 2013 Carnegie Prize.
